PRESIDENTS REPORT

What a difference one year makes to how we feel about Karori Cricket Club!

Just one year ago we were contemplating a number of aspects of our Club’s life in rather negative terms, because of how we saw these things.

Firstly, our playing performance, and the prospects of relegation- in 2004/05 our two top senior teams had averted relegation, and not by that much. Today, we look with immense pride at how the Pearce Cup team captained so ably by Lee Edwards, and the Senior 2 team, lead inspirationally by Nick Hearn, have spearheaded the Club’s advance. These two teams played so well throughout the season, culminating in close and successful finishes. For the Pearce Cup team, to win the inaugural “20/20” cup, and then to earn the right to play off with Easts for the two-day championship, which got rained off, was just fabulous. To top off, at the Cricket Wellington prize giving, the team won the umpires’ best and fairest trophy, Stephen Murdoch won the best aggregate trophy, and Lee Edwards again won the most wickets cup.The Senior 2’s played very good cricket, and await a decision from Wellington Cricket on promotion into Hazlett Trophy, resulting from complications in the rules. In the lower grades, Karori turned in some excellent results to end with a seventh in 2A; two thirds in 1B A, and 2B and two fifths in 2C and 1BB.

Secondly, our team spirit came alive through the grades, and this was great to observe. The playing performances all happened without a “home ground”, for the Karori Park upgrade meant the whole playing area was unusable all the season. Not so the clubrooms, which Dave Hooley kept open each Saturday. Turnover topped the previous season, as teams came back from all over Wellington/Hutt Valley. At the season’s end, the entire Senior 2 team drove to Wainuiomata after their match, just to watch the end of another match, on which much depended. The annual prize giving function was a great success, with “a big crowd in.”The Management Committee did a great job throughout the season, and my heartfelt thanks go to Dave Hooley as chairman and treasurer; Nick Hearn as club captain; Rob Ellis as secretary, Lee Edwards as Senior team Captain, and Graham Rooney as lower grades coordinator, for their tireless work.

Thirdly, the various arms of the Club worked very effectively to address the big issues, namely the upgrade of Karori Park, the planning for the renovation of the pavilion- both Wellington City Council projects; the upgrade of the Karori Park Sports Club’s clubrooms; planning for the 125th anniversary celebrations around October/November of this year; tightening the relationship with the Junior Club, a combined Senior/Junior website, and a longer term sponsorship plan. This work involved the Management Committee, the Advisory Board, the Karori Park Sports Club, and the Karori Cricket Foundation- all pulling together. The new website is now well into final planning. It will greatly assist contacts with players, parents of juniors, members and supporters in New Zealand and overseas, as we plan such events as the next season, The 125th Club anniversary, plus keep everyone informed.Financially, Karori Cricket Club is in a healthy state. It is a small club, and must mind its affairs prudently. It does- take a look at Dave Hooley’s Chairman’s Report.

So we can be assured that Karori Cricket Club is in good heart, and very keen to “kick off” the coming cricket season with strong membership and player numbers, a very exciting new Karori Park, a renovated pavilion, and upgraded clubrooms, thanks to extremely generous grants from the NZ Community Trust, Unison Trust, Century Foundation

The prospects are for new and wider activities using the Park, pavilion and clubrooms; new revenue streams from the clubrooms, and a reputation as a premier sports and recreational facility in the Wellington region.
I thank you all for making this past season so satisfying. Let us do even better in the coming season

David Bain

Club President

Chairmans Report

The 2005-2006 season can only be regarded as a total success on and off the field. The club had no home ground at Karori Park, nor outdoor training facilities and was required to play all of its Pearce Cup and Senior Two games on the opposition's wickets.

The clubs committee pre season ensured that all teams were allocated indoor and outdoor training facilities and spent a considerable amount of time recruiting new players to the club.

The first team finished second in the Pearce Cup, while the reserves achieved the same result in their grade. Our new 2a team, after a difficult start to the season, cemented their place in the grade. The clubs "social" teams all performed well during the season.

The clubrooms were kept open all season, despite not having a home ground, with good attendance’s by all teams at the after match "wind up" and various additional events.

Financially, another successful season with a $12631 surplus, resulting in the club being in a strong position at the end of the year. We achieved a 100% sub collection rate, received some sponsorship/grants from outside agencies and funded all possible costs through the various gaming trusts. Expenditure was kept under tight control. However, some of the gaming trusts have redefined their grant allocation procedures, as a club we must therefore maximize other funding opportunities.

I would like to take this opportunity to express a vote of thanks to the following individuals

Firstly
The clubs committee:
Lee Edwards, first team captain and team manager, Rob Ellis, our club secretary and senior two team manager, Nick Hearn, our club captain and Graeme Rooney, who looked after the "social " teams and was also team manager of our 2d team. Since seasons end Graeme has resigned from committee and has been replaced by Damien Le Breton our 2a team manager. This committee has been a privilege to work with and have put in a considerable amount of time since our last AGM to ensure that our club was run in a professional manner.

Secondary
Our Club President Mr, David Bain.
David has attended committee meetings, been one of our representatives on the Karori Park Sports Club committee, been a member of the clubs advisory board and had considerable input into the ground and club rooms redevelopment’s at Karori Park

Thirdly
Our representatives on the Karori Park Sports Clubs
Being Mr. G Tall, T Tyler, D Bain and myself .These gentleman have once again represented our club in a professional manner, with Graham and Ted holding the positions of Chairman and Treasurer .Considerable activities are being worked on by the KPSC, at the present time one being the redevelopment of our clubrooms. At the start of June, 270k has been raised for this 400k project. The balance will be made up from contributions for the clubs, in the case of the senior’s 10k and juniors 12.5k, soccer 40k with the remaining 70k from additional outside funding and naming rights. If there is a funding short fall, the "job" could be broken down into two stages. Detailed plans have been drawn up; work to be commenced shortly with a projected completion date in late 2006 or early 2007

Fourthly
The clubs advisory board
Being Mr. R Murdoch, D Bain, B Gray, C Shanly, H Gibbons and P Benfield .At the committees request the board was asked to look in four matters being how do we cerebrated our 125th anniversary, how do we obtain the best use out of our new home ground, how do we obtain additional sponsorship, and how do we get a closer relationship with the junior club.
They have reported back to the clubs committee

 Fifthly
Team Managers
Being Lee Edwards, Rob Ellis, Damien Le Breton, Tony Delorenzo, Graham Rooney, Kylie Berg and Dave Randall. All team managers looked after their teams professionally and gave good feedback to the committee and ensured good attendance by their players at after match functions

Finally
Thank you to Bob Murdoch for his continued work to ensure the upgrade of our new home ground is completed with the best interests of our club to the forefront. Due to poor weather during April and May we will not get any use of the new blocks until post Xmas 2007

Since the end of the season the committee has been planning for the 2006-2007 season
1/ Have upgraded the clubs website www.karoricricket.org.nz The junior club kindly donated a substantial proportion of the costs to enable this upgrade to be made. Please use this website, as it will be updated on a regular basis
2/ Continued work on the clubrooms and ground redevelopment
3/ Recruited new players for the 2006-2007 season
4/ Made funding applications for the 2006-2007 season
5/ Are seeking new funding opportunities
6/ Set new goals for the 2006-2007 season

Finally, the 2006-2007 season, should be the start of a new stage in the " life "of our club, with a new ground and updated clubrooms, a good financial and player base to work from and a committee and club supporters with the same goals for our club

Season Review First Team

This season has been one of concern. Fortunately for us, the concerns are for our future opponents and not us. The reason I make this bold statement is purely because of the threatening talent that is now starting to produce promising results.

For me there were several stand-out moments and achievements this season that I think are worth mentioning. The first of which is recognition to Steve Murdoch and myself. Steve finished top Pearce cup run scorer, and I finished top wicket taker for a second year running. These results are indicative of the talent our team has and will hopefully inspire others to produce similar performances next season. Steve Murdoch broke a major barrier this season, scoring his maiden Karori century against Petone mid way through the season. Once this happened, Steve got a taste for runs and became a run-scoring machine. He notched up a further two hundreds before the season ended, one of which was in a 20/20 match. He then carried his form to India during a post-season tour with the Wellington development team, scoring another ton in his first knock. Steve was accompanied on this tour by three other Karori team mates, James Hill, Hamish Templeton, and Chris Spring. As part of my season tally, I managed to sneak a cheeky hat-trick against Onslow in a close fought one-dayer that we subsequently won.

The most significant success the team enjoyed this season was in winning the inaugural Wellington club cricket 20/20 competition. This event was run over 2 days and consisted of two sudden-death pool games, a semi-final, and then the final. With this version of the game being foreign to all, our lack of 20/20 experience provoked us to take a haphazard approach. I’m sure that those who have played for and watched Karori in the past would quickly agree that a game dictating unorthodox cricket, is one tailor made for Karori. As it turned out, we played what we considered "our final" in the semi’s against the eventual Pearce cup winners Eastern Suburbs. This was a see-saw match that kept all those watching, and playing, on edge. Firstly, we found ourselves reeling at 90/9 after just 9 overs but thanks to some calculated batting by Tama Walker and Jared Sewell, we limped through to 168 all out in the last over. As it turned out, that was the match winning effort. We were then able to restrict Easts to 156/7 off their 20 over allocation. We then faced Naenae in the final and won that game with consummate ease.

I attribute this seasons success largely to the depth of the top two teams. The healthy situation of players having to perform to earn their keep certainly kept players honest and focused. I found that there was a greater awareness of upcoming players. This produced good competitive pressure on those in the senior team.

One of the pleasing aspects of this season for me was that we showed good grit and determination at trying times. A ‘die hard’ attitude is one thing that we have traditionally been lacking. It could be said that although we lost a few close ones this season (namely both games to Taita and the three-wicket two-day loss to Petone) we certainly fought hard in those matches to give ourselves an unlikely chance of winning. In addition to that, we won games this season that we would not have previously won in the past. Well done boys.

This season we had an "All Kiwi" team. We elected to bypass an overseas professional and take on board two homegrown talents from the Wairarapa. Tama Walker and Craig Tennant each bought with them a variety of skills that was very much suited to what our team required. Tama proved an invaluable spinning option with his left arm orthodox turners, whilst Craig proved himself to be a competent Opening Bat/Wicker-keeper.

I think the key to our next season is proving that this year was no fluke. If we are to prove that, then our opponents concerns will further escalate and soon everyone will label us as the team to watch out for. There is no reason why we shouldn’t win the Pearce cup next season. I have high hopes for our boys and think that we are long overdue for a league win.

Have a safe winter and I will see you all next summer.

Regards

Lee Edwards

Karori Senior Team Captain.

Season Review Senior Two

The 2005/06 season once again began with high hopes of pushing for the Senior 2 grade intercity title. After a less than exemplary 2004/2005 season, the clubs management committee again worked hard on the recruiting of new players and retaining the core of the existing team. The focus was on having players that wanted to play cricket week in and week out. We knew the season was going to be difficult without the use of a home ground, so the tight team feel we were trying to develop was a key strategy in our success.

After an excellent pre-season workout at the Westpac Stadium, the Reserves team set about making amends for the previous season. Meeting Wellington College first up on a one-day fixture, we suffered a narrow loss. Our performance in the one day form of the game was a weakness that we would later rue, but the loss first up was followed by a very successful first half of the season that saw us leading the competition going into the Christmas break.

The success, growth, and maturity of the side was once again ably led by our captain Nick Hearn. A hunger to win was instilled and the winning habit continued. Memorable wins in the first half included a first ever win over a well-drilled Wellington College team at their home oval.

Nick Hearn again topped the batting, scoring both the highest aggregate runs (508 at 42.33) as well as the highest individual score (148). Nick was shaded in the highest average stake by one of the team’s new additions in Ben Cameron (72.29 over 7 innings). Ben added another true allrounder to the team and added 10 wickets at 21.3 to Nicks 25 wickets at 13.68. Duke Pomare, Rhys Grosvenor, Jono Sole, Chris Oldham, and Stefan Allan all chipped in with consistent runs.

In the bowling stakes Dom Carroll finished the season with the best average of 9 wickets @ 12.37, including a hattrick against Wellington Collegians in a one-day match. Nick Hearn, Dom Carroll and Hamish Wright (24 at 17.42) all took five wickets in an innings. Ben Walls, Mark Palmer, Jared Sewell and Rob Ellis added to a well-rounded bowling attack that was not often bettered over the course of the season.

The post Christmas season started poorly after a heavy loss, once again in a one-day match versus Wainuiomata, the team most recently relegated from Hazlett Trophy. It was identified that success in the one-day game was key to our chances of winning the grade, and sadly we could not capitalise on that. The key contributors to this were indifferent fielding, and most importantly, a lack of application at the batting crease. We were successful in turning the loss around to another two-day win, but this was attributed to our bowlers.

A second one-day loss to Wainuiomata, and the inability to beat the eventual winners of the grade - North’s, in a two-day match proved costly in the end. We ended up finishing second in the grade by 2 points, with Wainuiomata taking third place.

From a team manager’s perspective, it was again pleasing to see the performance of the new players in the team. Many of these players were also rewarded with opportunities in the Pearce Cup team. I would single out for special mention in this group Ben Walls and Stefan Allan who both added much needed consistency with both ball and bat respectively.

I was also pleased to see the feeling of team we achieved over the year. This was perhaps shown best when, having rolled East’s to claim a nine wicket two-day win in the last match of the year, the entire team jumped in a couple of cars and headed out to Wainuiomata to watch the last few hours of play between Wainuiomata and North City. This is how close the season ended. The winner of this game would take the title, but a draw would hand Karori the title. History shows that the North City won in the final controversial over to take the title and the promotion to Hazlett Trophy.

I would also like to mention special thanks to Damien Le Breton and his 2A team who worked with our team constantly to ensure we all had players available each week – even if it meant giving up some of his best performers to play in the Reserves team.

Over the course of the coming winter we will again be working on the recruitment of new players and the retention of existing talent. With more planning and a good pre-season build-up, our goal will once again be to win the Senior Reserve title and gain promotion to the Hazlett Trophy competition.

Season Review 2A

2a entered the grade having not played together as a team before and with it's skipper in his first year of being a captain. We struggled early on the season as we sought to obtain cohesion and experience. Our short term goal was simply to avoid relegation this season, with our longer term goal being to win the grade and advance to Senior 3 over the next two years.

After losing every game in the first half, we kicked off the second half of the season with a solid win which sparked a greater sense of competition and hunger. Due to our poor start to the season, we were always going to be fighting against relegation and our 200 run win against 3rd on the table in the last game meant that we achieved our goal of staying in 2a and actually finished ahead of both Easts and Collegians.

An important part of our season was the support of both Tony Delorenzo and Graeme Rooney in allowing some of their players to make the move to 2a (both permenantly and as fill ins), as well as Nick Hearn, Rob Ellis and Dave Hooley for their support also. Many thanks to the boys of 2a for guttsing it out through a very hard season of cricket and for the support of the senior players in the team - Frenchy, Tony A, Colin and all the rest of the boys who put their hand up.

Season Review 2C

It was a season of two halves. Prior to Xmas a consistent squad every week managed to put is solid performances and get a lot of wins. A draw with the co leaders of the grade in the final week before Xmas saw us go into the break a very respectable 2nd.

After Xmas player commitments saw a team that changed in make up from week to week and our performances showed it. Scratching out draws and odd win was not enough and a string of poor performances saw us eventually finish 5th..

Batting, so long our weakness was vastly improved with the addition of Hayden Warren to the opening spot. Not only did he manage over 650 runs he also managed 3 centuries. A stunning performance from a batter who came of age this season and will be sadly missed next year.

One batter does not make a team and other stars included Iain Smith who pulled out some stunning captains knocks when needed, Dave Hogg and Rajat Sharma the middle order run getters and Tony DeLorenzo the other opener who although was always in the shadow of Hayden none the less managed to get some good runs and secure an opening spot for at least another season.

With the loss of the entire opening attack from last year it was up to new team member Ben Fawkes to spearhead the attack. Ben bowled with venom and consistency and was rewarded with no less than 21 dropped catches. So many games were lost due to the dropsies that on the rare occasion one was caught there was a stunned silence.
Ever consistent Jake Rance and Iain Smith managed to take wickets at key times to at least keep us in the game and when they shined (Smith 7-37) we got the results.

Late entrants to the bowling attack were our two unlikely spinners Kamal Lamichhane and Rajat Sharma. It was late in the season before they were given the nod but they certainly took their chances. Kamall proved to be a good strike weapon and picked up a lot of wickets towards the end of the season. Again he will be missed next year and it will be up to Rajat to carry on the spin attack alone.

With pressure form other Karori teams for players the future of this 2c squad is not looking good. When we were at our best we were competitive but the loss of even 2 key players could see us struggle to secure any results in 2006-2007. It is a good social team that can win and so we hope there will be enough support to keep the team together.

Season review 2D

Karori 2D enjoyed a very good 2005/2006 cricket season. There were alot of newcomers to the team that have now made the Karori Cricket Club their "cricketing" home. The core team reamained stable throughout the year which contributed to the excellent results recorded.

Of all the one day games, only two were lost to Onslow and University respectively with all the other one dayers won realtively easily. The one day highlight of the season was in the second game of the season, against Brooklyn A where Karori put on 196 runs batting first on a low and slow Ian Galloway wikcket, and proceeded to bowl Brooklyn out for 45. Most notable figures in the scorecard was Shaun Murray's valuable 42 and Martyn Brace's bowling figures of 3-17-6

In the 2 day form of the game, no games were lost, with 3 draws and 4 wins.
The two day highlight was the last game of the season against Brooklyn B. Brooklyn elected to bat first and were all out for 164. The best bowling figures went to opening bowler Dan Murray, with 3-10-10. Karori then replied with 326 for 6 from 45 overs. Opening batsmen Dan Comber (77) and James McDonald (116 not out) dominated the opposition bowling. Brooklyn B were then bowled out on the second day for 134. Best bowling was again Dan Murray with 3-33-8. Karori won by an innings and 27 runs.

It is important to note that all the players contributed at key times during the games when required, making the 05/06 season very productive.

Season Review 1BA

From the highs of last season Karori 1BA started the season with a hiss and a roar, remaining unbeaten in their first 5 games, including a famous victory over the eventual winners of the grade.

Karori 1BA ended the season as the only team not to lose to the winners of the grade.

The season was full of highs and lows - weddings, engagements and trips away upset the team's tempo slightly but with the ever present supporter's crew cheering them on from the sidelines,

Highlight - wiping out the Onslow team and having the game wrapped up in an hour
Lowlight - only being able to play Karori 1BB twice.

The team would like to thank their supporters, the club, and each other for making the season what it was.
