Presidents Report

My Report to this year’s AGM is principally about expressing thanks to a whole range of people, who in a multiplicity of ways have excelled themselves for Karori Cricket Club.

I begin by thanking all players for their team and individual performances on the field, and the results achieved. If you have been watching the Club’s excellent web site through the 2006/07 season, you will be aware that these performances were throughout the year. That is why the Club deservedly won the Norwood Wellington club championship for the first time since it was instituted in 1977, and since our last championship win in 1975, both dates being before most of you now playing had been born! The championship is for the best average points for its teams over Wellington grades. So well done every player in all of our seven teams.

There were other playing notables for the Club in the Wellington grades. The Pearce Cup team won the 20/20 competition for the second season in a row; captain Lee Edwards won the trophy for the most wickets taken in a Pearce Cup season for the third year in a row; the first, second and 2C (A) teams each came third, and the 1B (A) team won its grade.

And all done with no “home” ground or clubrooms! All supporters of Karori thank our players for their loyalty and support. Club captain Nick Hearn had negotiated a new deal with our primary sponsors, “The Establishment” bar in Courtenay Place , and this became the “claytons” bar for last season. Great team spirit. This is what I saw on the night of our prize giving held there.

Meanwhile, back at Karori Park, and the KPSC clubrooms, much was happening. Due to horrible weather the Park was not complete, as was planned, at the cricket season’s start. So much had to happen to make the Park ready for re-opening on 19 May 2007

The big renovation of the clubrooms occupied KPSC members, and lots of willing workers throughout the year. It was hard going- a project with many dimensions. The NZ Community Trust, the Lion Foundation, and other sponsors are to be thanked for their huge generosity. Andrew Watson, Glenda and Louis Schmitt worked tirelessly.

KPSC ended up by 19 May with a sparkling clubrooms, that it will market to Wellington and beyond for years to follow. KCC ended up with a wonderful “naming rights” proposal from Doug Catley – the “Catley Curtis Nimmo Pavilion”, in recognition of three giant Life Members. Thanks Doug. The KPSC entered a one year renewable contract for the provision of bar, café and catering services. Thanks in anticipation Hoff Holdings.

All of these elements came together on Saturday 19 May, with a wonderful re-opening of Karori Park and the clubrooms, on a perfect autumn day. Our Patron, Sir John Anderson spoke about Karori CC, the Park, and early history of KPSC. The Wellington City Council and sporting clubs combined, and Doug Catley and Mike Curtis assisted the Mayoress to declare open the clubrooms. Thanks also to Harcourt’s for their generous KPSC sponsorship.

So, as it was in 1980, upon Karori Cricket Club’s 100th anniversary, and the opening of the KPSC clubrooms, KCC looked back on 19 May 2007 at 127 years of history and achievement, and looked forward to the opportunities of club growth, financial strength, and strong service to the community.

Our Club remains in excellent heart, and lead by a strong management committee. And now we turn our attention to celebrating 127 years. There is plenty of planning and work to be ready for these events later in this year. And I sense that Doug Catley has some thoughts up his sleeve on these celebrations. Keep watching our website!

I thank you all for making this past season so memorable and satisfying.

David Bain

Club President

Chairmans Report

The 2006-2007 season can only be regarded as a total success on and off the field The club had no home ground at Karori Park, nor outdoor training facilities and was required to play all of its Pearce Cup and Senior Two games on the opposition's wickets

The clubs committee pre season ensured that all teams were allocated indoor and outdoor training facilities and spent a considerable amount of time recruiting new players to the club.

The first team finished third in the Pearce Cup, with the reserves achieving the same result in their grade.

Our 2a team, after a good start to the season, cemented their place in the grade.

The clubs “social” teams all performed well during the season the highlight being 1b winning their grade

Financially, another successful season with a $4551 surplus, after donating $10000 towards the clubrooms upgrade, resulting in the club being in a strong position at the end of the year.

We achieved a 95% sub collection rate, received some sponsorship/grants from outside agencies and funded all possible costs through the various gaming trusts.

Expenditure was kept under tight control.

However, some of the gaming trusts have redefined their grant allocation procedures, as a club we must therefore maximize other funding opportunities.

I would like to take this opportunity to express a vote of thanks to the following individuals

Firstly the clubs committee:

Lee Edwards, first team captain and team manager, Rob Ellis, our club secretary and senior two team manager, Nick Hearn, our club captain , Damien Le Berton our 2a team manager and Chris Spring.

Thirdly

Our representatives on the Karori Park Sports ClubsBeing Mr. G Tall, T Tyler, D Bain B Murdoch and myself

These gentleman have once again represented our club in a professional manner, with Graham and Ted holding the positions of Chairman and Treasurer

 FourthlyTeam Managers

David Templeton, Rob Ellis, Damien Le Breton, Tony Delorenzo, Graham Rooney, Kylie Berg and George Glubb.

All team managers looked after their teams professionally and gave good feedback to the committee and ensured good attendance by their players at after match functions

Finally

Thank you to Bob Murdoch for his continued work to ensure the upgrade of our new home ground is completed with the best interests of our club to the forefront.

Since the end of the season the committee has been planning for the 2007-2008 season

1/ Continued work on the clubrooms and ground redevelopment

2/ Recruited new players for the 2007-2008 season

3/ Made funding applications for the 2007-2008 season

4/ Are seeking new funding opportunities

5/ Set new goals for the 2007-2008 season

Finally, the 2007-2008 season, should be the start of a new stage in the “ life “of our club, with a new ground and updated clubrooms, a good financial and player base to work from and a committee and club supporters with the same goals for our club

First Team Season Review

“Close but no cigar”.

This is probably a fair summary of our season. We just missed out on playing in the one-day final against Naenae, and also just missed out on playing in the three-day final. Our season (upon reflection) was influenced and ultimately decided by a one day loss to Eastern Suburbs (pre-xmas) in a game that we should have cruised home. In saying that however, I think there were more positives this season than in recent years.

This season was filled with many outstanding performances and showed signs of a team that is starting to find its feet in the Pearce Cup. There is no doubt that “Winning is a habit”. East’s have proved it with winning the Pearce cup again this year, but we further supported this theory when we successfully defended our club 20/20 championship in February. We just need to realise and believe that we can win the Pearce cup.

Standout seasons came from Chris Spring, Andrew Brunt, Jarred Sewell, and myself.

Chris Spring had a top score of 115not out which is made to look even better by the fact that when he approached the crease and looked at the scoreboard, it read 5 for 16.

Andrew Brunt was undoubtedly the find of the season, proving that he was more than capable of not only scoring runs at the top of the order, but doing it in an aggressive yet calculated way. Andy ended the season only a couple of runs short of the magic honours board figure of 500. A great effort for an opener, to get that many runs in Wellington in his debut season. A mention must be made to Ben Cameron who also did well picking up his 1st senior century in his first season with the team.

Jarred Sewell had an improved season, falling only 2 wickets short of the honours board for claiming 40 wickets in the season. He did however claim two 10-wicket bags during the season against Hutt Districts and Eastern suburbs.

I had a satisfying season (personally) finishing with 45 wickets. For an unprecedented 3rd time in a row, I managed to end up the leading wicket taker in the Pearce cup. I earned my best season figures of 7-21 against North City.

The team seemed to run either “very hot” or “very cold”. We had a pretty good run-in at the end of the season, beating Hutt Districts by 200 runs and then beating Taita the next game by 10 wickets. But then we struggled to compete in a must win game against East’s and found ourselves at least 200 behind with only 1 wicket in hand at the end of the game.

We are certainly a good team, but we are not a great team yet. What’s exciting is that I think we are not far off greatness. We will have our fortress in Karori Park back next season, and we will have the same bunch of guys, so it’s promising to be another competitive year with high hopes and high expectations.

I look forward to donning the whites and stepping out onto the home of Wellington club cricket next season

Senior team captain – Lee Edwards

 Second Team Season View

After coming so close to winning the Senior 2 title the previous season, the KCC Senior Reserves team were focussed on pushing for one better and winning the grade for the 2006/07 season.  Once again the core of the team was retained with a couple of additional recruits.  Missing from the previous season was Ben Walls, but newcomers Julian Balasingum and Brendan Maher proved to be excellent recruits.

The season started in typical Wellington fashion with a washed-out 1-dayer vs Easts, but the first completed game saw Karori bat first on an artificial wicket and score a massive 331-5 including a sensational 129 from Ben Cameron and 66* from Jono Sole.  In reply, Brooklyn were bowled out for 234 with Mark Palmer taking 6 wickets.  It was a great start from the reserves, and it was pleasing to see the team push through the overs to ensure the win was sealed before the rain arrived.

At this point in the season the KCC reserves team looked to be good contenders to win the grade.  With a large number of players putting their hands up, it was inevitable that some would get a chance to play in the senior team.  This proved to be the case and a number of players spent the remainder of the season in the senior team, or splitting their time between the two.  Ben Cameron, Stefan Allan, Jono Sole, and Simon Kent all fitted into this category.

The middle of the season became a challenge with a number of the senior members of the team being unavailable due to weddings and other personal commitments.

Of the players that batted 5 times or more, Jono Sole topped the averages with 84.  Stefan Allan averaged 84, Matt Atkin 30.2, and J Hill 27.1.  In terms of bowling, Nick Hearn led the way with 32 wickets; Mark Palmer took 27, and Dom Carroll 20.

Towards the end of the season Nick Hearn handed over the captaincy to Mark Palmer who has been the teams vice captain for the last few seasons.  Nick was selected to play seniors and during this time Mark did an excellent job.  Matt Atkin and James Hill were late season additions to the reserves team and made and excellent impression on the team.

Once more we will look to pre-season training in August to springboard ourselves into the 2007-08 season.  As always our goal will be to win the Senior Reserve title and gain promotion to the Hazlett Trophy competition.

 2c (a) Season Review

So Close! How close to winning the grade?  Ball!

One more wicket in the final over in the final game would have seen us win and take the entire grade. But it was not to be so we look back on a year of missed chances and a lot of laughs.

With the loss of our star opener Muppet to higher honours we were off to a bad start. Then along came the levelheaded Welshman Dave Shuff to save us from our opening woes. Dave managed the only century for the team and fell agonisingly short of a second in the last game going for 99.

Batting overall this year was a vast improvement. The top order, while never completely firing, almost always managed to put on a respectable score with at least one of the top 5 getting runs.

Opener DeLorenzo dragged his failing body to the game and managed to assist where he could before the likes of Smith, and Nowland plundered runs and should these batters fail you could always count on Hogg to prop up the score with some elegant stroke making or Rajat to grind an innings out.
Bowling was spearheaded by Smith and Nowland, with Nowland finding some real form over the season. Abbot when given a chance bowled with real venom and almost snatched the grade in the last game with one of the best spells I’ve ever seen at this level.

Keepers this year included DeLorenzo, Smith, Warren, Nowland, Niraj but none could beat Broadfoot Bart. Throwing his body about with no thought to personal safety or to the earthquakes created in China from the shock waves of his body crashing to earth. The reserve keepers only being called in after a nasty dislocation before Xmas.

As mentioned the final game was the grade decider and when it came to the crunch everyone stepped up. We caught everything! Abbot got his best bowling figures. Shuff got 99, and 3 batsmen got their season high scores. Jezza smashing 30 managed to triple his season’s runs.

Where we lost the grade was the perennial lack of players throughout the season. Big poachers of players included, births, big day out and injuries. The so called ring ins became vital part of the team and big thanks go to the likes or Sujay and Niraj and big thanks goes out to Chris who organised a lot of extras. Chris was always there for the team, be it at practice, getting fill ins, or in the field with his fielding and his tactical observations.

Other points of the season

Dropped catches. The major one being Dave Hogg who ended up in A&E after one smashed through his hands into his face. But not as bad as the Uni batter that ended up in hospital trying to find is knee cap.

Stunning keeper catches from 4 different keepers.

Glassman Jezza. Yet again injury plagued. If we get a full season out of him Look Out!

Sam’s Smashing sixes over the bowlers heads. Particularly at Ben Burn

Great days bowling! Brooklyn all out 32, Uni all out 52, Sri Lanka 63-9!

Our delightful Welshman. With the bat, the ball, and the singing in the slips.

Jet planes for successful bowlers and fielders! Thanks Hoggy great innovation that!

Next year? Bigger and better!

Tony DeLorenzo

 1B Season View

   Captain: Scott Carson

   Manager: Kylie Berg

   Team sponsor: Tulsi Restaurant

Players: Hugh Blackstock, Nilan Ekanayake, Heath Goble, Hamish Armstrong, Bart Fine, Paul Dungey, Jeff Loan, Mike Loan, James Howell, Reuben Selvaraj, Shane Jensen, Paul Ralph, Rob Sanson

Winning the grade was a fantastic end to what was a long season for Karori 1B.  Player recruitment began in August 2006 and although the team had lost some players from previous seasons, numbers were looking healthy and some of the new faces brought new skills and experience to the team.  Securing a sponsorship deal with Tulsi restaurant before the season began meant the team approached the season determined to win the grade and improve on 2nd and 3rd placings in 2004/05 and 2005/06.

By late October and throughout November the weather was more akin to rugby rather than cricket season and the enthusiasm waned slightly as Captain Scott Carson broke his leg, Tom Oldfield injured his knee and needed surgery and a number of other players sustained injuries from playing indoor soccer and netball.  As manager, I suggested issuing a directive banning the team from playing indoor sports but the suggestion went down like a lead balloon and we were forced to cope with various indoor-sport related ailments throughout the season.

The season finally got underway on November 4th vs. Johnsonville at Ngatitoa. This game was a chance to get to know some of the new recruits and remind some of the regular players how to bat and bowl.  Securing a win first up was an excellent confidence boost for the team and the win was backed up by good results against previous arch-rivals Victoria University, Tawa and other Johnsonville teams.

Some outstanding performances from team regulars were backed up by the numerous fantastic ring-ins we relied on throughout the season.  We owe a big thank you to those who answered late calls on a Friday and turned up ready to play on Saturday.  Despite willing players, it wasn’t all plain sailing – there were losses that shouldn’t have been losses and after two losses to North City it looked like winning the grade might not be possible.

By season’s end, three teams could have won the grade but Karori 1B’s competitive streak was a force to be reckoned with.  The final game was played against North City in freezing conditions at Endeavour Park.  It was the third time that Karori and North City had met in a top of the table clash but this time there was much more to play for.  As always, the supporters crew were there in force and while they retreated to the warmth of their cars in the second innings they did stay to see their boys through to a well-earned victory.  Winning the grade was a terrific achievement, particularly given how unattainable  a goal it seemed mid-season.

At the club’s awards night Jeff Loan was awarded team MVP and Rob Sanson won both most improved for the team and also the club’s overall most improved lower grade player.  The team also took out the David Bain cup for the best club team.  Being awarded the David Bain cup for the second time in three years shows that the club is not afraid to give recognition to the lower grade teams, we thank the club committee for this and hope that long may it continue!

The team owes a huge thank you to Monty Patel, owner of Tulsi Restaurants.  A chance meeting with one of the team led to Monty purchasing playing uniforms for the team and that, combined with discounted meals at Tulsi proved to be a winning formula. Monty was a fantastic host whenever the team was in the restaurant and we encourage all members of the club to dine at Tulsi and let Monty know that his support is greatly appreciated.
