Cricket Wellington advises that the start of the junior cricket season has been delayed for a week, until the 8th of November.
"Cricket
It is hoped that all junior cricket will commence on Saturday 8 November but this will depend on the weather over the next month and how much time council staff can spend on the grounds.
On the senior front, cricket for Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy is due to get underway on Saturday 18 October. Senior 2, Senior 3 and Senior Women’s are due to start on Saturday 25 October. It is envisaged that these grades will play on artificial wickets through to, at the earliest 8th November.
With this in mind Cricket Wellington proposes to play Premier, Under 14 and possibly Colts grades on the first two Sundays in November (2nd and 9th). Games will be played on artificial’s utilised by the seniors on Saturdays and we would look to play morning and afternoon games to cater for the three grades. Whilst we understand the Colt’s grade is based on ability, we feel it is important to try and provide the Premier and Under 14 players as many games as possible before they head off to college, therefore they would have first crack if pitches are limited.
It was proposed at the last convenors meeting that the under 10 grade could be modified to 16-20 over’s for the first two weeks and played on a Friday night. As we are only losing one weekend, the under 10 grade will commence on Saturday 8 November. If we receive early notice of the 8th being cancelled, we will circulate an email to clubs asking what teams are interested in playing on Fridays."
