     Profile

A burly right-arm fast-medium bowler, Derek Stirling started his first-class career brightly. Aged just 19, he took 6 for 75 against Northern Districts in January 1982, figures he never bettered. He became one of the many New Zealanders under shadow of Richard Hadlee for the rest of the decade.

He made his one-day international debut in Sri Lanka at the end of 1983-84, oddly before his selection for a Young New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe. Stirling then played all three Tests in Pakistan in 1984-85, acqutting himself well on what were trying pitches, including 4 for 88 in the third Test at Karachi.

But he fell out of favour just before New Zealand's momentous back-to-back series wins against Australia in 1985-86. Stirling responded with 26 domestic first-class wickets and toured England in 1986, where his second-innings dismissal of Derek Pringle at Nottingham helped open the door to a victory that could have slipped away. But at The Oval, in his final Test appearance, he bowled too short on a fast track, and in one over was carted by Ian Botham - returning from a ban - for 24. He played league cricket in Scotland in 1984.

     Profile

A medium-fast bowler with one of the better hitting eyes in the game, Richard Petrie flashed over the cricket horizon in the summer of 1990-91 playing 12 one-day internationals. And from that point until he retired from first-class cricket in 1999-00, that was the only time he played international cricket. A bowler capable of extracting disconcerting lift, Petrie's aspirations were dealt a severe blow when he suffered an Achilles tendon injury. It reduced his speed considerably and he reverted to more guile to secure his wickets. His hitting ability made him an invaluable prospect in one-day cricket, a point utilised by Wellington after his transfer there from Canterbury in 1993-94. While he achieved a first-class century, his highest score in one-day games was 85, but there was no doubt bowlers around the country breathed a sigh of relief when they no longer had to contend with a Petre firestorm at the crease. His 135 wickets in one-day games were secured at an economy rate of 4.23 while his 134 first-class wickets cost 30.43 runs each.

Pen Portraits  of players from the clubs 100 year anniversary book

Karori Cricket Club 1890-1980' by John Stribling. They were written at the

    conclusion of the 1979-80 season.

This section contains pen portraits of those cricketers who represented Wellington while playing for Karori. Unfortunately these criteria are rather discriminatory in that they exclude players who have given long and valued service without playing first class cricket but include some whose impact of Karori cricket was not great.

The possibility of including the full season-by-season career records of each player was considered but space did not permit their inclusion and brief details of the best performances are contained elsewhere in the text. Adrienne Morris has calculated the full season-by-season career records of all Karori senior players and there are available to any member who wishes to peruse them.

The players appear in the order of their first appearance for Wellington.

  •  Maurie Browne first played cricket for Karori in the boy’s league while attending Wellington College. Upon leaving College, Browne joined Wellington College Old Boys but a few years later, in 1934-35, along with Ken MacDonald, Gordon Rowe and his brother Frank Browne, he transferred to Karori who that year won the second grade and so acquired senior status.

Browne was a leg spinner of exceptional guile and very few people could pick his wrongun. He was also a successful left handed batsmen at club level – batting down the order he had little opportunity to score runs at Plunket Shield Cricket. Selection for Wellington was gained in 1937-38 and again in 1938-39 but the war intervened and after 1946 Browne was often unavailable for representative games. In all he played 9 games for Wellington scoring 164 runs at 16.4 with a highest score of 58 and took 21 wickets at 28.9, his best return being 6/89 in his first game.

In 1947-48 Browne was a member of the Karori team that won the Cook Shield and he captained the team that won the senior title in 1950-51. In his final season in Senior Cricket he captured 4 wickets with successive balls. Browne retired to the Presidents grade and was later involved in the establishment of the Wanderers Club. He was a New Zealand hockey representative in 1937-38. For Karori, Browne scored 3825 runs at 27.7 and captured 304 wickets at 20.7 runs per wicket.

  •  Jack Duffy joined Karori from Institute in 1935-36. The previous season he had taken 10 wickets in an innings for 80 runs with his left arm spinners but for Karori he was known primarily as a steady and consistent left-hand opening batsman. He played 9 games for Wellington between 1940-46 scoring 458 runs at 26.9, had a top score of 71 and also took 5 wickets. For Karori Duffy scored 2911 runs at 25.3 and took 174 wickets at 23.9. He captained Karori in 1945-46.

Gordon Rowe represented New Zealand at both hockey and cricket. He was a correct batsman, a perfectionist, whose best shots were the square cut and cover drive, as well as a capable wicket-keeper. As noted elsewhere, Rowe played one test and scored the dreaded “pair”. In addition to Rowe, who shares the dubious honour of being New Zealand’s lowest scoring test cricketer, Reid and Congdon, who are first and second in New Zealand test aggregates, have been associated with Karori. Rowe was more successful for Wellington scoring 324 runs at 27.0. His best effort was in a two day non-first class match against Canterbury in 1944-45. He scored 102 and 79. Later Rowe represented Central Districts. Or Karori Rowe scored 2012 runs at 24.8, made 29 wicket-keeping dismissals and took 40 wickets at 24.1. He was Karori captain in 1949-50.

  • Jack Tynan was better known as a hockey player than a cricketer, being New Zealand hockey captain for several years. Although hockey tours sometimes interfered with his cricket, Tynan played senior cricket from 1944-45 to 1963-64 scoring 4820 runs at 22.5 and capturing 103 wickets at 19.9. He captained the senior team in 1955-56. Tynan did not do himself justice as a Wellington representative. In 4 games he scored 80 runs at 11.4 and took 2 wickets for 48 runs. Jack Tynan was a batsman of considerable skill who was often seen at his best when quick runs were required. Primarily a front foot player he excelled in the straight and cover drives.

  • As a schoolboy John Beck was a brilliant left-handed batsman and following a successful tout of South Africa, on which he played his first first-class game and scored 99 (run-out) in his second test, great expectations were held of him. However, from the time of his return Beck suffered mixed fortunes. His batting could be inconsistent and this resulted in a series of abrupt recalls and dismissals from the representative teams. Regular press attention must have added to Beck’s uncertainty and he never secured a permanent place in the Wellington team.

At his best Beck was a delightful batsman to watch, with a very upright stance. He was particularly powerful off the front foot with the cover and square drives being his specialties. If need be he could be a courageous defender, as at Johannesburg in 1953. Beck was also a very fast runner between the wickets but is probably best remembered for his magnificent cover fielding. In 8 tests matches Beck scored 394 runs at 26.7 and in all matches for New Zealand (20) 754 runs at 22.2. For Wellington he scored 713 runs at 27.4 with a top score of 149 and for Karori 2971 at 27.0. His innings of 166 in 1960-61 remains the highest innings for the club in senior cricket. After taking 80 minutes over the first 50 the second was hit in 13 minutes and the third in 18 minutes. Normally Beck would bat at number three, but being a team man was prepared to drop down the order if his form was not at its best. Beck was Karori senior Captain in the early 1960’s.

     Notes
New Zealand Cricket Almanack Player of the Year 1953

  • Lawrie Miller is best known as a stubborn left-handed opening batsman who was hard to get out. A front foot player, he went forward to all bowlers irrespective of the conditions. However, he could unleash some fine blows and at club level frequently scored quickly. He scored one century for Karori in even time and a hit in one game, which landed three houses down Fernlea Ave. ranks as perhaps the longest blow from the Southern end – though John Anderson might dispute this.

Miller came to Karori upon his return from South Africa having previously represented Central Districts. He captained Karori in 1956-57 and 1957-58 and on both occasions Karori won the Cook Shield. He caused a chuckle in the game when he recalled an opposition batsman who had been given out by the umpire because in his opinion (and others agreed), the batsman was not out. Subsequent appeals to the umpire in question were fruitless, being turned down on the grounds that the batsman had already been given out several overs ago. At test level Miller scored 346 runs at 13.8 in 13 tests. His best series was against Ian Craig’s Australian side (1956-57) but these were not official tests. In all he played 48 games for New Zealand, scoring 2215 runs at 29.5. During his Karori days he scores 1572 runs for Wellington at 47.6 and for Karori compiled 2161 runs at 44.1. While with Karori he twice won the Redpath Cup.

  • Mike Curtis was a Karori player from the time he left Nelson College and developed into one of the best wicket-keepers never selected for New Zealand. He played 17 matches for Wellington between 1956 and 1959 taking 31 catches and making 4 stumpings. In the North versus South Island match held prior to the selection of the 1958 team to tour England Curtis took 8 catches, 4 in each innings, a New Zealand record at the time. He also top-scored in North’s first innings, with 22 not out and with 27 runs was the second to top scorer in the second innings. There was much disappointment in Karori when John Ward was chosen as Eric Petrie’s deputy for the tour. At club level Curtis had success with the bat early in his career but in the later years scored few runs ending with a record of 1165 runs at 15.7 and a top score of 119 not out. He made 152 dismissals as a wicket-keeper, 123 caught and 29 stumped.

  •  Paul Standidge was a dynamic left-handed opening batsman who, when in full flight, had the ability to tear any attack apart. He respected no bowler’s reputation. In his first game for Wellington he strode purposefully to the wicket and returned to the pavilion two overs later with a score of around thirty. Standidge possibly holds the world record for the longest hit. In a club game at the Basin Reserve he struck a ball clean out of the ground. The ball lodged in the number box of a passing tram and was later found at Newtown Park Zoo. The blow became the subject of on of Neville Lodge’s Sports Post cartoons. Paul Standidge played 4 games for Wellington in 1957-58 scoring 95 runs at 13.6 runs per innings. For Karori he scored 2738 runs at 25.8.

His father Jack Standidge also represented Wellington playing one game in 1940 in which he scored 29 runs in two innings. In games for Karori Jack Standidge scored 2414 runs at an average of 20.1 and took 63 wickets at 28.3 each.

He was also an accomplished senior batsman – last season he was to be seen striking the ball to all corners of Western Park for a lower grade Tawa team. Bray played 4 matches for Wellington as a Karori Player in 1950-60 scoring 37 runs at 7.4 and taking 8 wickets at 22.0. • John Parson, who had represented Canterbury before he came to Karori was one of the fastest bowlers to have played for the club. However, he varied his bowling considerably and the batsman never knew whether to expect a very fast delivery or an off-spinner. Parson did not have a long cricket career. He excelled in many sports, other interests intervened, and so cricket did not see the best of him. He played 5 games for Wellington in 1961-62 scoring 26 runs at 7.2 and captured 11 wickets at 20.0. In senior matches for Karori parson scored 321 runs at 16.1 and bagged 71 wickets at 22.9.

John Reid’s cricketing exploits are well known and well documented. He excelled in all facets of the game, a true all-rounder. Reid was a powerful batsman with all the attacking shots and a versatile bowler who prior to injury bowled genuinely fast, even off a comparatively short run, and later bowled a mixture of medium paced off cutters, off spinners and fast deliveries. Reid played for other clubs in Wellington, Hutt Valley and Otago before finishing his playing days with Karori. He scored 656 runs for Wellington between 1963 and 1965 at 50.5 and took 30 wickets at an average of 19.4 runs each. For Karori Reid scored 1394 runs at 38.7 and captured 91 wickets at 12.4. A super allrounder, John Reid was born a generation too soon, for he retired in 1965 before one-day international matches were started. Reid would have been a one-day team on his own - a batsman with thunderous strokes, a rapacious fielder especially at gully or cover, a bowler of what became known as right-arm bursters which ranged from modest off-cutters to snarling bouncers. Reid also fitted in some stand-in wicketkeeping. But for a bout of rheumatic fever in his late-teens Reid might have become the ultimate New Zealand allrounder, for his rugby prowess overshadowed his cricket - but after recovery rugby was off limits. Reid's Test-match scores fluctuated in his first decade, but he touched glory on tour in South Africa in the 1961-62 season, setting a record of 1915 runs, seven centuries (leaving Denis Compton, Neil Harvey, Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton and Arthur Morris in his wake). Reid later became a New Zealand selector, took his coaching and management talents to South Africa for a time, but returned to New Zealand to join the front rank of the International Cricket Council referees.

He did not bat and took 1/60. Later in his career he played for Wellington College Old Boys and in one memorable game took 1/34 in one over against Karori at Karori Park. John Anderson hit 4 sixes in the over, three of them off successive balls which travelled ever greater distances down the road. Anderson skied the last ball and was caught, to which Paetz acknowledged, “That’s really buying a wicket.”

  • Jeff Schofer, a right-handed opening batman, was the top run scorer in Wellington senior cricket no fewer than four times between 1968 and 1975. Consequently it was a great surprise that Schofer, who scored his runs steadily in an unobstructive manner, but could score quickly when the occasion demanded, played only three games for Wellington in 1970 scoring 96 runs at an average of 24.0 and did not appear again after a match against Auckland in which he batted well, scoring 43 and 28. Wellington had a surfeit of good openers at the time. With players like Bilby and Murray most favoured, but Schofer’s consistent club scoring deserved better recognition over the years. For the Karori senior team, which he captained for several years, Schofer scored 5183 runs, considerably more than anyone else, at 32.9.

However, because Wellington had a string of top line pace bowlers at the time Cater’s services were not required regularly at first-class level. • Like John Reid, Bevan Congdon is one of New Zealand’s greatest test cricketers and like John Reid he played just some of his club cricket for Karori – in fact, because of Wellington and New Zealand selections he played only 5 games for Karori scoring 257 runs at 36.7 and securing 14 wickets at 13.0 with his slow-medium deliveries. For Wellington he scored 272 runs and captured 4 wickets but his best performances while a Karori player took place in the West Indies. In the tests he made 531 runs at 88.5 and gathered 13 wickets at 34.2. He was second in the test and tour batting and bowling averages; to Glen Turner and Bruce Taylor respectively.

  • Two Karori players represented Wellington in a game against the New Zealand Under-23 team in 1966. They were Tom O’Neil, a right-arm swing bowler who was a prolific wicket-taker for Karori in the early 1960’s, taking 317 wickets at 15.6 and John Hammel, a free scoring, left-handed, middle order batsman, fine fieldsman and proficient wicket-keeper. He represented Karori at senior level throughout the 1960’s and after a very successful spell in one-day cricket returned to two-day cricket on a fairly regular basis (some team was always short) and has had no trouble fitting into any team from 2C upwards. Hammel had one other first-class game, for New Zealand Under-23 side in 1963. For Karori he scored 3439 runs (to date) at 21.8. He was captain of the senior team towards the end of the 1960’s.

  • Another Karori player who had one game for Wellington (in 1943-44) was George Dickinson, the former New Zealand cricket and rugby representative who was by then approaching his fortieth birthday. However, he had several very successful seasons with Karori scoring 1042 runs at 17.4 and capturing 178 wickets at 14.0 with his fast deliveries. In 1941-42 he almost completed the double of 500 runs and 50 wickets, scoring 498 runs and taking 56 wickets. Arthur Carman actually records that he scored 503 runs. The records from the time, based on newspaper reports, are possibly a little unreliable and either could be correct. Either way Dickinson has the best all-round season experienced by a Karori player.
