The Karori Cricket Club has started the 2006/2007 season off to a glamourous start with the first
of it's club nights in celebration of it's 125th anniversary - the inaugural Mr Cricket 2006 competition.

The event held at the Southern Cross Bar on Friday 29 September , comprised of three sections
which each team put forward a representative  to compete in.

Judging was provided  by Karori Netball club and our huge thanks go out to Ailsa, Jimmy and Sarah
for doing a great job in electing the winner for the night.

The first section was the formal wear section – otherwise described as the "dress to impress section".
And how the competitors did impress!

The judges were particularly impressed by 2A's representative, Mr Colin Kennedy - one judges comment:
"There's nothing better than an Irishman in a three piece suit!"

The 2C representative, Mr Tony De Lorenzo scored well with the judges - his Italian chest, stubbie shorts
and suit jacket, caused the judges to swoon.....although if it was due to the compulsory rubbing of his
bare leg, or his sheer masculinity, we're not sure.

The next section was the infamous "swimwear section"....and big props have to go to Mr De Lorenzo,
the 2C rep, who stole the show with his "bouffant" hairstyle peeking out from underneath his gaudy
briefs swimsuit. The loud Hawaiian shirt and bare chest with ever present gold medallion simply could
not be overlooked......this man dominated.

Coming a very close second in my books was the Reserves rep, Mr Duke Pomare. Duke is an employee
of a fashion store and his selection for the swimwear section was a pair of women’s underwear from the
discount bin at his place of employment......the fact screams to me of a man doing it for his club....
what a team player!

Mr Marcus Hill, the Seniors rep also did very well. The words "washboard abs" soon spread throughout
the crowd like a wild fire; as did the words "spray tan"....Marcus did well in this section, showing what
more time at the gym and less time out eating pies at 3am can do for you....

The third and final section was the interview section, where our judges got to know our contestants
a little better. And for me, this section was all about the hearts and minds....

One of our teams couldn't find a man of suitable quality to enter into the competition, so the ladies
supporting that team got together and created an entry they named Mr Joe Schmoe. This fella was
cricket personified. Made from brown corduroy and stuffed with beanbag filling, he wore his cricket
uniform with pride and his escort for the night, Miss Kylie Berg, spoke for him describing his charitable
work and compassionately advocated him as Mr Cricket 2006 due to his unwavering support for the club.

Clearly the judges were impressed, and not just by the corduroy!

However, despite the great showing from Joe "corduroy" Schmoe,it was the man from 2A that came
through the interview with the top marks from the judges - Colin scored top marks with his answers
to the questions "Where would you take me on our first date", "what would be the first thing you would
buy if you won lotto" and possibly the most difficult question I've ever heard; "How many ways can
 you get dismissed in cricket?"
For the record, the answer is ten - but please don't ask me to name them.......

So in the end, Colin Kennedy took out the "People's Choice"(decided by the patented Nick Hearn
"applause-o-meter") as well as the overall winner as decided by the judges....

Colin won two vouchers to "groomz hairstylez" (donated by Johnny at Groomz) and a $100 bar tab
at the Southern Cross (donated by yours truly!).

In addition, he also holds the title of "Mr Cricket 2006" – a title that I'm sure he will find opens doors
for him at clubs around the city should he care to explain it to the bouncers.......

Finally, please put your hands together for my offsider for the night, Mr Nick Hearn who was my co-MC
for the night and our Club Captain.I felt Nick and I worked pretty well together - we put on a steady
partnership with the microphone in hand  and once we had our eyes in we really applied the pressure
and as a result, the runs (and witty remarks)  came quickly....

Overall a very good night for the club and only made possible by the courage and club spirit shown
by those guys (and  one gal) that got up there and competed for the title - a huge thanks  to the
competitors - you guys were great!
