Karori Cricket Club :: Newsletters07-08

Karori Cricket Club Newsletter  (1) 3 November 2007
by Lee Edwards – Senior men’s team captain.

Hi all,

And welcome to yet another exciting season with Karori Cricket club. I have been asked to put together a regular newsletter to inform past and present players, amongst others, of what’s been happening lately at the club. I will attempt to give a quick rundown on how each team is shaping up as well as any other newsworthy events.

Anybody who has been around for the last 2-3 years will undoubtedly know about the much-anticipated completion of the redeveloped Karori Park. It’s been a long time coming but Im glad to say that we will be playing on it this season for the first time since the summer of 2004-05. This is just one of the reasons why this season is to be an exciting one. Partnered by the redeveloped park, is the newly refurbished and renovated clubrooms which is now more modern and accommodating for the supporters and members who will watch the action unfold in the middle.

Senior Men’s Team:

This season promises to be another successful one with a relatively unchanged squad from last season. The pre-season preparation was somewhat hampered by the unavailability of several players who only arrived back recently from abroad having just had an off-season in the UK. In saying that though there was still a successful pre-season trip to a twenty20 competition in Christchurch which saw the team lose the final in a bowl off (after rain stopped play).

In addition to this, a 45 over friendly game was arranged against Onslow at Ben Burn Park. The total of 227 looked a long way off for Karori at 5/68, until Nick Hearn steadied the ship. Ably assisted by Jarred Sewell (20) and Brendan Mahar (29) Nick constructed a well-earned 70 until he was out with only a few runs needed. In the end Karori got home with 2 wickets and as many overs to spare.

The season officially started for the Senior team on the 13th October which saw them win their first two games (versus Taita and Upper Valley) with consummate ease. The 3rd game however was the first real battle which saw Karori fall short by 20 odd runs against Eastern Suburbs.

Senior Reserves:

The Senior Reserve team has come ‘oh-so-close’ to winning the Senior 2 grade and being promoted to the Hazlett Competition, for the last two years running. This year will prove to be different. The ‘senior squad’ provides a luxury that not many clubs have, a group of talented players who all could play Pearce Cup, and the flow on from this is that our reserve team is again very strong. I have no doubts that this year, with the depth that the club has built up over the last few seasons, and a team with amazing spirit and passion, we will be finally crowned Senior 2 champions, and promoted to the Hazlett Trophy.

As with the Senior team, the Reserves have a very familiar look about them, and everyone is looking forward to getting back onto the home of cricket, it’s been far too long between drinks breaks. I’m really looking forward to leading this team to success, both on and off the field, with the help of other senior members in the team. Bring on the 20th of October (and an inaugural stump race to christen the new ground that evening???)!!!
Cheers Matty A

The reserves actually had a good start to the season winning their first game against Easter Suburbs, with a 4 wicket win. The next game however was not so fruitful. Playing against a talented Wellington College 1st XI team, the reserves were put to the sword. The schoolboys amassed over 300 runs which quickly proved to be too many as the climbing run rate saw karori wickets fall too regularly resulting in a premature conclusion to the chase. The next game (last weekend) however, saw the reserves pull one out of the bag. Playing Eastbourne, the reserves limped through to 138 all out in the 29th over. In reply, Eastbourne were 60-1 and then 82-2, only then to be bowled out for 130 in the 37th over.

Both the top two men’s teams have lost one game and will have hopefully learnt from their mistake. We will watch both teams with much anticipation and high hopes of both teams achieving 1st place in the respective grades.
