K-Town started well by winning the toss, and with memories of the last
game played on this Grenada North pitch (season opener ’06-’07 -
opposition bowled out for 33) we chose to field first. Sam and Tony D
kept the openers quiet with tight bowling and forced some panic,
rewarded by Dave Murphy (Thor) effecting a run out from the cover
boundary.
Dave Hogg, our specialist first change bowler, came on and was unlucky
to not make an immediate impact, with many near chances. A ball change
(where did the last one go Hoggy?) resulted in some more luck for the
bowlers, with Thor, T, Hoggy, Sujay, Muppet and Isaac all picking up
scalps, with good straight bowling to roll J’ville for 99 in 35 odd
overs.
Ash's fielding on debut and two runouts from the boundary were the
highs of the fielding, while dropped catches from Sujay and the
captain were the only disappointing displays.
With such a low target and batting down to 11, there was no need for
risk, and Muppet and Ash batted sensibly to move us along to 30,
before Ash departed for a 3 that was worth much much more. Muppet
provided some fireworks, particularly when driving the ball into the
non-striker's stumps twice in two balls, keeping the umpire Hoggy on
his toes. Iain Sparky Smith and Phil Donovan came and went cheaply
(Phil was welcomed to the crease by a bouncer off a length, the only
ball to bounce higher than knee height all day), and at drinks K-Town
were 41-4, and J’Ville were confident.
Then Sam and Thor decided to play some shots, Thor in particular
sending the ball flying unbelievable distances over midwicket. Sam
went to a good running outfield catch with the score on 81, but that
only bought Isaac (17* off 4) to the crease to quickly finish things
off, with Dan Bassett (0*) solid at the other end. A continuation to
the good start to the season provided by the thrashing of 2A in a
20/20 warm up, and with plenty of options with batting and bowling,
this should be our year to take out the competition.
