Sunday 22 February 2009:
The day started interestingly with Sam losing the toss and K-Town being put into bat... with the opposition barely having enough players on the pitch.
By the time Wade and
K-Town didn’t get off to a great start being 33-2 by the time the time the last Karori player arrived (Broadfoot on a 10 minute warning to play – after a 4 month hiatus).
Robertson continued on his way taking his chances and playing some sensible cricket shots to reach his 50 after the 20 over break but K-Town were losing wickets consistently until Hogg (8) and Robertson made a solid 42 run partnership. Wickets continued to fall and Robertson was out on a solid 82 nearly batting the entire innings. Burns played his shots for a well fought 30 not out with the tail registering a twitch more than a wag.
K-Town all out for 174 leaving 3.5 overs in the bag to boot.
Nowland and Smith opened the bowling and successfully contained the Uni openers and kept them fighting a run rate. Unfortunately Smithy was robbed a couple of wickets with some dropsies in the field (Nowland with 3 which was most unlikely) but got the final say on one of the Uni players post a boundary by taking his middle stump.
At one point Uni were 4 down with very few on the board including a wicket to Robertson which consisted of having 6 fielders around the batsmen (including the keeper) and when the batsmen went to swat him the batsmen was caught by Burns.
Sam had to rotate his bowlers around and continued to look for consistency and containment. Mitchell Jack made his return for the season and had a good bowling and fielding effort all round but was unlucky with one batsman continually cutting from the most unlikely positions which a number of bowlers suffered.
The bowlers used included Hogg who did not achieve his normal breakthrough and a 6 over stint from Broadfoot from his massive 8 pace run up...
Unfortunately the containment efforts were in vain and despite a late wicket to the cutter (we really needed a close and deep point to take the chances on offer) K-Town could not hold Uni at bay.
V Easts Sat 15 and 22 November
Day one of the new season and we started at Karori Park pitch 3. Great to get a start at home and finally kick off the season after some false starts caused byWellington?s winter.
We started in the field, and Easts opening batsmen were given some chanceswith Bumby uncharacteristically throwing a ball under arm (usually it is a low flying over arm missile)to miss a run out and a catch behind not being given. Ultimately Van Hattum was out from a run outfromthe keeper after attempting a single off a leg glance from the striker, but not before plunderinga large amount of runs off Karori. Between times, wickets fell steadily at at the 20 over mark wewere in a strong position.
After the break however, Easts kicked on through the batting of Cooper (to mind the man of the
match with 48 and 83 with the bat and a solid effort with the ball) who was plundering sixes off very good balls.
The curse of dropped catches came back with some streaky shots between keeper and slip being anissue on two occasions, Rummers getting a bullet but not taking it and Smithy missing what wouldhave been an awesome caught and bowled chance.Ultimately Easts were all out for 202 with Sammy taking 4 wickets, Colin a brace and Suj and Smithygetting one each as well (Smithy?s coming from a diving catch from the keeper while off balance;perhaps pies for breakfast is not a good idea???).Our batting line up was slim, with Hogg (running around a mountain), Robertson (unavailable until December),Warren (inAfrica) and DeLorenzo (injured) meaning 4 of our front line top six (Nowland and Smithy making the other two) unavailable. It was going to be a tough day with the bat and Easts were taking wickets regularly but Smithy dug infor a hard fought 35.Only two batsmen reached double figures (Extras was the 3RD highest score ? Sam J)with Broadfoot being the highly unlikely second batsmen through some deft edges <cough>.Karori ended up on 98 and could have been forced to bat again but this was overlooked by Easts. This left 2 overs in the day, and Easts ended Day 1 with a 125 run lead and no wickets down. However back at the clubbies we were shouted to a few beers (despite our efforts)and it was good to see the clubrooms pretty much at capacity at times through the evening.
Sam Nowland 9 2 59Iain Smith 10 1 33Colin Kennedy 17.3 4 64Sujay Prabahkar 5 1 19Day 2:Day 2 started with the threat of rain... but that wasn?t going to save us as it was looking like it would
come at 6pm by the Metservice but arrived on Monday.
In the second innings we were to get Easts on the back foot early with Sujay, though erratic at times, getting the break through and with a good overhead catch by Baker (at keeper to replace Broadfoot)the opener was gone.We were down a few players from the first innings with the pace of Hogg replacing Colin Kennedy, and Tony DeLorenzo making his comeback from injury. The catching effort was a lot better this weekmissing only 3 catches in total but we were massacred again by Cooper and his 83.Sam once again bowled exceptionally well taking another 4 wicket bag and ending with 8 for the game.Chasing a formidable total, and without Iain Smith this week, we again lost early wickets but Hoggand Baker were batting well until Hogg was run out from a single that was a touch too quick...perhaps running a little gingerly? Baker was batting well until a soft dismissal; a number of players guiltyof not hitting through the ball to completion and instead being hesitant in their shots.
A number of batsmen got starts, but never really went on with it.Broadfoot was (cayenne) peppered with short balls and got off the mark with a shot from the topof the bat handle, earning a fine.Ultimately bowled playing far too extravagant shot rather than blocking...Jezza Burns played his shots well getting a number of boundaries until succumbing.David Murphy played some elegant shots until stumped after falling down one of the massive cracks that had appeared in the pitch during the week. We?re still looking for him...The tail wagged slightly, but by this time we were playing for the weather and/or time and couldn?t hold out.The beer at the clubbies was a little flat ? a bit like our effort.Kudos to the Scotsman Robertson from Easts who stuck around and had a yarn or two over a beer.
Roll on next week!Sam Nowland 9 4 46Sujay Prabahkar 6 2 24
