The
Wildcats have returned to their winning ways with a 40 run victory, in a
Karori club derby this Saturday.
The
Wildcats were sent into bat on a scorching day at Adventure park and compiled a
competitive, but not comprehensive, score of 118.
Under
pressure early after Justin Eggs fell in the first over, Adam Eggleton looked
in great form in getting a quick 12, before being unluckily caught by a
screamer a low diving screamer of a catch, after he had smashed a short one to
midwicket. Julian Balasingam, on return from his rest and
rehabilitation stint in
Captain
Simon King made the bold, many would say foolish, decision to
put perennial Wildcat Battlers Tim and Pat into the top 6, and the two repaid
the captains ambitious faith, with Tim scoring 28, and Pat 30. Both innings
were by far the highest the battlers had scored for the Wildcats, and
proved a valuable contribution in ensuring the Wildcats posted a competitive
total. Tim was particularly strong through the off side and down the mid
on and mid wicket regions, and Pat scored his first 6s in Wildcats
colours.
The other
highlight of the innings was the dismissal of left arm Chinamen, Jacob Parry,
which will surely go down in Wildcats history as the funniest dismissal. A
loopy full toss from the Karori leg spinner, Jacob left the ball, only to see
in shock as it dropped down hitting the base of middle stump. Jacob tasted a
dose of his own leg spinning medicine, and it was bitter. And Simo proved
colour blindness wasn't a complete barrier to runs, looking good in compiling a
quick 5*, but running out of partners to continue with. Know him before you
judge him.
In
defending the solid total, the Wildcats bowlers all chipped in, with the most
impressive being ring in Christian (good work Sass), who bowled an excellent
and consistent line and length. However, all the bowlers contributed to the
defence, the only real negative being far too many extras, with 15
wides and 4 no balls. That gives any team an extra 20 runs plus extra
deliveries to smash. Jacob also continued his impressive bowling
form for the season, but was not rewarded with any
wickets.
Julian
proved his worth was not just as a batsman, with some clever field decisions
resulting in a catch at short 3rd man to Tim, and others going fractionally wide
of his placements.
The only
dropped catch of the innings went to Simo, who seemed to think the Wildcats
were at Uni games playing volleyball again, as he set the ball over the
boundary for 6, when it should have been caught, or one bounce four. A little
unlucky on the bolwer Sass, who had bowled well, but Simo did make up for it
with 2-10 of 3 overs with the ball.
The other
highlight of the fielding display was a brilliant catch by Justin Eggs at short
cover, diving to his left, to remove Karori's most dangerous batsmen.
A good win
for the Cats, and the highlight probably being simply getting a game, only our
3rd in 6 or 7 weeks of the season, due to the unpredictable Welly weather.
